IKPA NKATA · THE ART OF CONVERSATION
In Igbo, depending on pronunciation, nkata can mean a conversation or a basket, while ikpa means to weave. Ikpa Nkata can therefore mean to weave a basket or to weave a conversation. The doubling is apt: a basket carries an assortment of things; a conversation gathers ideas, memories, questions and perspectives from which meaning is woven. In an oral culture, conversation is not merely speech. It is an acquired art and a form through which knowledge is tested, carried and renewed.
